Field of expertise:  CO2 monitoring methods, Geomicrobiology and Environmental geology

WP4 will through research and development on existing and new monitoring methodologies improve our ability to confirm the fate of the CO2 being injected into the subsurface. For example will the development of improved inversion techniques of CSEM data result in better illumination of the CO2 plume. The work on rock physics experiments and modeling will produce new data for better quantifying the CO2 saturation from seismic and EM measurements. Furthermore, the work on surface heave monitoring will be important for understanding the geomechanical response   and how fractures and faults could potential cause leakage of CO2 to the surface. Finally, research on geo-biological and geochemical processes will be important for the development of techniques that can provide early warnings of leakage.

Overall, WP4 is very important for reducing the risk and uncertainties in sub-surface CO2 storage.

The activities in Work Package 4 are:

4.1 Controlled Source Electro-Magnetics (CSEM) to detect CO2 in the subsurface

4.2 CO2 saturation dependent rock physics models (resistivity and velocity)

4.3 Develop prototype of gas flux sensor for monitoring CO2 leakage

4.4 Feasibility study on monitoring techniques for surface deformation related to CO2 injection

4.5 Development of methods for early detection of leakage from reservoir to neighboring formations

4.6 Fracture related rock physics

4.7 Uncertainty analysis for Controlled Source Electro-Magnetics (CSEM) Instrumentation related to detection of CO2 in the subsurfaceoncepts for seal sequence
